Julia Dollison and Kerry Marsh: The Music of Maria Schneider
Welcome to our Session Producer project for The Music of Maria Schneider, where we look forward to creating an original recording for you of one of Maria Schneider's great works—and having you participate in the process. By choosing to participate, you will have a unique look into how we prepare for and execute the recording and production of your piece, multi-tracking our voices in place of the original wind instrument parts, including trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, saxophone, flute, clarinet and more. By joining us in the process, you will get to experience the thrill of bringing new sounds, colors, textures and perspectives to what are already some of the greatest original compositions in the jazz world and beyond!
As a Session Producer, you will be able to follow the development of your recording and see how it will fit programmatically within the set of pieces that will eventually come together to complete the final album: The Music of Maria Schneider. You’ll find that we’ve already provided our first written journal entries, in which we discuss the origins of the project idea, how we came to be interested in this music, and how it brought us together both personally and professionally. You'll also find a description and audio sample of each piece being offered, photo galleries and videos from some past live performances, and a look at our home studio, which will be used for the vocal tracking process. We hope that these will serve as a preview of your experience as a Session Producer and a glimpse of what we hope to achieve by having your participation.
To begin, you will receive an exclusive pdf document containing a portion of the annotated score that we'll be using to record your piece, with the markings we'll be using as we start tracking. Next, you’ll have access to additional online journal entries with ideas on what directions your piece will be taking as it is tracked. You will also have access to multiple mix-outs (isolated vocals, high parts vs. low parts, etc.) and video of the tracking process, as well as rough mixes of the version, as the process moves forward. In addition, you will receive exclusive audio and/or video recordings of our discussions as we listen to Maria’s original instrumental recording of the piece and make critical decisions about the vocal version.
When completed, we'll be sending you our audio commentary on the studio recording experience, as well as a personalized video greeting to express our gratitude for your participation. You'll be invited to the final mixing/mastering sessions, as we wrap up the process. Finally, you will also receive credit as the session producer of your selected piece, and your name will appear on copies of your individual track recording as well as on the completed album.
You can also purchase Julia's latest CD, "Observatory" which includes exclusive online, audio shows, videos, downloads, and more! |
